Bae Seong-du encountered missionary William M. Baird and embraced the gospel
2. 김해로 내려와 약방집을 하던 배성두는 자신의 첫아이가 사산되고, 둘째는 우물에 빠져 죽고, 나머지 아이마저 역병으로 죽게 되어 실의에 빠져있었다.
1893년 9월 28일, 이웃인 김종함의 권유로 베어드 선교사가 세운 사랑방(초량교회 전신)에서 베어드 선교사를 만났고, 통역자 고학윤을 통해 하나님을 믿게 되었다.
Bae Seong-du, who had relocated to Gimhae to manage a herbal drugstore, faced profound grief after the loss of his first child to stillbirth, his second child to drowning in a well, and his remaining child to an epidemic. On September 8, 1893, at the suggestion of his neighbor Kim Jong-ham, he had the opportunity to meet Missionary William M. Baird at Sarangbang (a gathering for sharing the gospel, now known as Choryang Church / estabilished by Baird). With the assistance of translator Go Ha-gyun, Bae found solace in his faith…
1. 김해교회의 태동과 빠른 성장

2. 1894년, 최초의 자립교회인 김해교회가 세워지게 되었다.
배성두는 베어드 선교사에게 복음을 받고 김해로 돌아와 김종함과 함께 한약방에서 초보적 신앙공동체를 시작하였다. 황해도 소래교회 다음으로, 한강 이남에 한국인이 세운 최초의 교회인 김해교회가 1894년에 세워지게 된 것이다.
배성두 장로와 동역자들의 섬김과 헌신으로 교회가 시작된 지 4년 만인 1898년에 독립된 예배당을 마련했다. 설립 초기부터 빠르게 성장하여, 1905년에 이미 교인이 200여 명에 이르게 되었다.

2. 설립자 배성두는 풍전등화와 같은 나라의 어려운 상황 속에서도, 복음 전도뿐만 아니라 구제와 인재 양성에도 남다른 열정을 쏟았다. 한글학자 이윤재와 독립운동가 허발 선생이 뜻을 같이하여, 학교를 세우는 일에 동참했다.
1907년에 김해 합성초등학교를 세웠고, 독립열사인 배동석 지사와 같은 훌륭한 인재를 배출하였다.
The founder Bae Seong-du was deeply committed not only to spreading the gospel but also to providing assistance and cultivating talent, even in the face of challenging national circumstances. Lee Yun-jae, a Korean language scholar, and independence activist Heo Bal shared this vision and actively contributed to the establishment of the school. In 1907, Gimhae Habseong Elementary School was founded, playing a pivotal role in nurturing exceptional individuals such as the patriot Bae Dong-seok, who later became an independence martyr.
